Dark Wings: A love Story

She roams the edge of heaven patiently, far away from the rest of the celestial beings. She is banished. Punished, she thinks. She believes her sin was love. Love for a man below her class, love for a man across the tracks. Its as if she was white and he was black like once upon a time.

Before their punishment, they danced along the line between heaven and hell believing surly, somewhere, it must end. They scoffed at looks, rules and norms. They kissed hard, naked, under the spotlight of the moon. Their passion bled on the pavement of light.

To them all there was…was love. They bridge gaps with their tongues and blended divide with a mirror. Filling the unnatural separation with its own reflection. Rebellion. Showing the void its flaw. It self. The sin was to keep their hearts apart.

They took baths in the salty Easter Sea. Surfing mavericks. Fearless and free…free as can be. At nightfall, she dug through space and breached the dark. She crossed the tracks, sneaking into hell, to keep him cool under the flaps of her wings.

“How did you end up here my love?” She said. Flapping away. Holding the surging heat at gunpoint.

“I did not believe in your kind.”  He inhaled between the flaps. “During my time I never saw you, even when I begged.” He allowed the air to cool his lungs. “The more I begged; the more faith became just a word.”

The clash of cool and fire caused his breath to smoke.

“I will get you out of here if it’s the last thing I do my love.” She froze her wings and cacoon his body. “Sleep and dream of none of this.” She gazed across the endless pit.

That night he dreamt.

As images painted against the dark another woke and took notice.

It was God.

Dreams aren’t allowed in hell. He was the first sinner to have ever dreamt. The dream shook the core of God. Sensing the undoing of the hinges within the system God interrupted.

The next day God sent her on assignment. Then summoned the Ice Dragon from the depths of space. “Freeze his breath then drop it in the sun.” He commanded. The dragon plunged. Target marked.

Far away her wings raised and pulled her from her task. Her feathers trembled. A couple peeled of the bone and fell frozen. Her wings were crying. Her lover was about to die from existence, even the existence of hell.

She roared a roar no barrier could contain and with all her might exploded through the wake of the noise. Folding space and time she plunged so fast she set the universe ablaze. All man on earth yelled of the end coming. They flooded churches and hung on the tails of priest and those alike. From the shadow of the cross they emerged quoting scriptures, becoming believers.

God trembled and shook the arms on his throne. The screws were loosening, the hinges coming undone…the system in jeopardy. The dream becoming a reality, all men were starting to believe in God.

God grabbed his bow and arrow. Tied a line to the arrow. Aimed straight up and sent the arrow into the roof of heaven. Once the line became taut, God tugged at it pulling tomorrow on top of now. Right before God eyes all men was in the kingdom of heaven. There was no hell. All men believed. The system was unraveled.

God took an arrow from his chest and aimed it just to the side of earth. He pulled back with all his might and launched. He filled his lungs with air and blew a gust behind the arrow. The arrow knifed through space like nothing through emptiness. Once passed earth, the force caused earth to rotate 1 day backwards. There, man once again fussed about the existence of God.

In hell the Ice Dragon hovered above her lover, dripping sharp icicles down on his body. The dragon dug its claws into its own chest and rip blocks of ice away. Then the dragon inhaled, pulling breath from the motionless man. As the breath was about to be sucked into the dragon’s chest, she appeared. Flaming, wings on fire.

She darted into the dragon’s chest. Melting it from the inside, until there was nothing but cold rain. Smoking, her body black with tar, her wings burnt crisp and dark, she took her lover up and poured air into his lungs.

He gasped.
He coughed.
She cried.

God entered.

She cradled him in between her black wings.

“This love is sin.” Said God.
“No love is sin.” Said she.

God roared. She tightened her wings and roared back. God stepped back to the insubordination. Around angels of heaven and hell observed. Satan, the most curious of them all.

“I will speak to you both separately and in private. First hand me him.” She walked before God, turned and uncoiled her wings. The man landed limp in the hands of God.

“I can erase the seed of her from your mind and place you alive and well back on earth. You can start again.” Said God.

“Will I ever know her if that is done?” He asked.

“No you will not. But you can start again and through your acts see heaven.”

“I choose my current state.”

“Why did I know you were going to say that?” God laughed with frustration.

“Because you are God, of course.”

“No!” God said. “Its because we have had this discussion before.”

“Wha.”

God touched the man face.

“I can erase the seed of her from your mind and place you alive and well back on earth. You can start again.” Said God.

“Will I ever know her if that is done?” He asked again.

“No you will not. But..”

“I choose my current state.” He said. Quicker now.

“You will never enter heaven in your current state.” God sighs. “But I will not kill you. I cannot. You will stay in hell all of eternity, with the concept of time. You will see her but 1 second every thousand years.”

“I accept.”

“I can erase the seed of him from your mind and place glow back in your wings my child”

“I accept nothing without him.” She said.

“Why do you love him more than I, your father?”

“I love both you and him the same. Is that so wrong?”

“It threatens the system.” God yells.

“What system?”

God touched her face.

“I can erase the seed of him from your mind and place glow back in your wings my child”

“I accept nothing without him.” She said

God picked up a grain of sand. “If this grain enters you, you will know the concept of time. That man will never enter heaven and you shall be banished from it but not out of it. You will roam the edges for eternity. Seeing him but one second every thousand years. The choice is…”

She grabbed the hand of God that held the grain of sand and stabbed herself in the heart.

She turned and walked away. No longer able to fly. Wings dark, without light. One thousand years for one second of him.

He cools his skin with a thousand years of dreams. A thousand years of pain and dreams for one second with her.
